Canadian steel producers are cutting more jobs as the United States imposes tariffs on Canadian steel. Metal Processing Group (MPG)'s Ivaco plant in L'Orignal, Ontario, notified members of the United Steelworkers (USW) of 30 permanent layoffs last week and plans to temporarily lay off 120 workers next week.
Since US President Trump implemented the tariff policy, the steel industries of Canada and the United States have adjusted their operating strategies. The Canadian Treasury has also implemented proportional retaliatory tariffs on US steel, aluminum, and other products.
The Canadian Steel Producers Association requires the government to take resolute action to curb China's unfair competition in steel imports and promote the application of domestic steel in infrastructure construction. In response, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) has asked relevant departments to give priority to projects using domestic steel and aluminum. Faced with tariff pressure, Canadian steel companies are counting on the government to propose more support measures to alleviate their difficulties.
