Following the United States (US) President Donald Trump's announcement on March 12 regarding new 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports, with no exemptions for any country, the Canadian steel sector has already begun implementing layoffs.
The United Steelworkers stated that the largest private-sector union in North America with over 225,000 members in Canada, approximately 200 members have already lost their jobs as a result of the new tariffs.
The worst case scenario would occur on April 2, when the United States announces broader reciprocal tariffs on all countries. The union anticipates that this will likely impact 100,000 of its members.
