Germany announced a climate and energy alliance with Morocco to promote renewable energy and hydrogen production. This partnership aims to support Germany's shift to hydrogen as a key energy source to reduce emissions in industries such as steel and chemicals that cannot be electrified.

Germany, striving to be climate-neutral by 2045, will need to import up to 70% of its hydrogen due to limited space for large-scale wind and solar power. Development Minister Svenja Schulze highlighted Morocco's favorable conditions for producing green hydrogen and emphasized fair collaboration for mutual benefits.

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita acknowledged Germany's significant role as an economic and political partner. The alliance will also foster electricity trading cooperation between Morocco and the EU, involving German technology firms.

Germany has supported Morocco's renewable energy efforts with over EUR1 billion in subsidized loans since 2012, contributing to projects like the Ouarzazate solar plant, set to produce 10,000 tons of hydrogen annually by 2028 or 2029. The alliance will explore hydrogen transportation to Germany and Europe.
