EU to reduce steel imports by 15% in response to US tariffs

In response to the new US tariffs on steel, the EU will cut steel import quotas by 15% starting in April to prevent a flood of cheap steel into the European market. This move aims to protect local steel producers' competitiveness.

Since the US imposed a 25% tariff on steel on March 12, EU officials expect steel producers from Canada, India, and China to redirect exports to Europe. The EU has warned that without stronger import controls, it could become a dumping ground for low-priced steel, threatening local industries.

The EU will also implement measures to support the struggling metals sector, including revising public procurement directives by 2026 to prioritize European steel.
