Canadian miner Teck's CEO, Jonathan Price, mentioned that they have been working on plans to sell zinc to Asia rather than the US to avoid tariffs from Donald Trump's administration on Canadian imports. Teck has around 260,000 metric tons output of refined zinc per year.
According to the International Lead and Zinc Study Group (ILZSG), the above-mentioned quantity equates to less than a third of total US demand in 2024, which meant 848,000 metric tons, or 6% of the world's total.
The CEO said they had been working on plans for months since Teck sells most of its zinc to America. The 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico have caused trade conflicts between the US, Canada, and Mexico.
