New federal regulations requiring Canadian steel importers to report the "country of melt and pour" come into effect on November 5, enhancing transparency in Canada’s steel supply chain.

Besides recent tariffs on Chinese steel, these measures aim to protect domestic steel producers and promote fairer trade.

Catherine Cobden, President of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, praised the alignment with US policies to strengthen North American supply chains.

Terry Sheehan, the Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, emphasized that this step is part of the government’s commitment to rebuilding Canada’s steel industry, defending jobs, and countering global overproduction, especially from countries like China.
