Primetals Technologies, an engineering and plant-building company headquartered in London, has signed a contract to provide Gerdau Petersburg in Virginia with a 69-kV static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to support the plant’s alternating current electric arc furnace (AC EAF).

The installed construction will be completed within the next 27 months. After the facility is commissioned, it will be the largest industrial STATCOM ever implemented by a steel mill in North America.
