Namibian steel producer H2-DRI Green Iron Manufacturing (Pty) Ltd. (HyIron) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy (MIME) of Namibia and Japan’s Toyota Tsusho Corporation to advance the development of a green iron and steel value chain in Africa. 

The partnership aims to establish a zero-emission production system using hydrogen-based iron reduction technology, moving away from traditional carbon-intensive methods. This initiative supports global decarbonization and green industrialization goals.

As part of the agreement, the partners will conduct a joint feasibility study on expanding green iron production in Namibia. They will also explore the creation of a special economic zone and the necessary infrastructure to facilitate industry growth. 

By combining HyIron’s expertise in hydrogen technology, Toyota Tsusho’s industrial experience, and Namibia’s natural resources, the project seeks to demonstrate the viability of sustainable steel production.
