Trade union protest slows NMDC’s iron ore production

13 Mar 2025 15:39 reported by Stanley Wang

India’s largest iron ore producer, NMDC, is facing disruptions across its key projects due to an ongoing work-to-rule protest by trade unions linked to wage negotiations. The slowdown significantly impacted operations at NMDC’s Kirandul, Bacheli, and Donimalai projects, reducing daily production by 30 to 40%.

NMDC acknowledged the disruption, stating that conciliation proceedings with trade unions are scheduled for March 17, 2025. Despite the slowdown, the company assured stakeholders that financial impacts remain minimal and all assets are fully insured.

In February 2025, NMDC reported a 17.85% year-on-year increase in iron ore production to 4.62 million tons, though sales saw a slight dip to 3.98 million tons. The company remains focused on resolving the dispute and restoring normal operations.
