Japan’s ferrous scrap exports slide in 2024

Japan Customs statistics showed that Japan’s ferrous scrap exports amounted to 6.54 million tons in 2024, falling by 5.6% from the previous year.

Among them, Vietnam purchased most scrap from Japan, with a total of 2.6 million tons, a year-on-year hike of 54.3%. South Korea and Taiwan ranked second and third with the procurement of 1.56 million tons and 670,000 tons, dropping by 41% and 32% year on year, respectively.

In December last year, Japan exported around 728,000 tons of ferrous scrap, rising by 19.5% compared to the same month a year earlier.
