European Commission supports transition of steel and coal industries

The European Commission (EC) has announced EUR 175 million for the Research Programme of the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) in 2025. This major initiative, set to launch in February, will allocate EUR 100 million to the steel industry for projects focusing on key technologies such as carbon capture, storage, usage, process intensification, and CO2 neutral iron ore reduction. 

The coal industry will receive EUR 35 million for projects that include repurposing closed mines, waste management, methane emission monitoring, and recovery of essential raw materials. An additional EUR 40 million per year will be available through tenders in June, with beneficiaries expected to include universities, research centers, and private companies.

The RFCS plan aligns with the goals of the European Green Deal, which aims to achieve climate neutrality in the EU by 2050. It emphasizes the importance of clean technologies and a just transition for coal-producing regions.
