Spain's Gestamp buys low-emission steel from Salzgitter

Spain's Gestamp Automoción S.A., a multinational specialized in the design, development, and manufacture of highly engineered metal components for the main vehicle manufacturers, and Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the future supply of low-CO2 steel using the SALCOS® process. This agreement aimed to establish circularity routes, combining steel deliveries to Gestamp's European plants, including Germany, with the return of scrap from these sites.

SALCOS®, Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking, is Salzgitter's initiative to transition to hydrogen-based steel production by 2026 and achieve nearly CO2-free production by 2033. The current Peiner route already provides low-CO2 steel by utilizing high-quality scrap in electric arc furnaces.

Gestamp, a long-term partner of Salzgitter, primarily purchases hot-rolled and cold-rolled flat steel products for its plants in Germany, the US, and Argentina.
