ASI urges authority to prohibit unprocessed steel scrap export

19 Apr 2024 15:38 reported by Stanley Wang

A A A
The Australian Steel Institute (ASI) called on a Federal Government Senate Inquiry to enforce a ban on exporting unprocessed steel scrap. ASI emphasized steel scrap as a crucial and depleting national resource, and it also warned that local mills would be unable to provide full service to fulfill the growth of Australian construction and manufacturing industries without the prohibition

In addition, the submission pointed out that without the ban, the reliance on imported steel scrap would increase, which might further cause higher carbon emissions through the transport process and increase risks of undermining domestic industry viability.
