Tata Steel may shut UK's Port Talbot blast furnace

23 Mar 2023 16:33 reported by Vicky Wang

A A A
The UK government must announce its support for the decarbonization of the country's steel industry by July, or Indian steelmaker Tata Steel will face closing one of its blast furnaces at its Port Talbot plant in the UK.

The decision will be subject to the government's decarbonization policy. The company will decide whether to extend the blast furnace's life, shut down the blast furnace, or replace it with new electric arc furnaces.

If the blast furnace is closed, thousands of people will lose their jobs and it will also hit the UK steel industry.

The two blast furnaces at the Port Talbot plant produce around 3.6 million tons of liquid iron per year.
