Alcoa to restart San Ciprián aluminum smelter in Spain

7 Feb 2023 16:49 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Alcoa Corp., a leading aluminum producer in the US, said it had reached a deal through a vote with a majority of workers for a phased resumption at its San Ciprián alumina refinery in Spain in January 2024 after a two-year suspension.

The phased restart will be completed by October 1, 2025, and from then until the end of 2026, the San Ciprián smelter will be operating at at least 75% of its nameplate capacity of 228,000 tons per year.

This smelter suspended primary aluminum production in December 2021 as high European energy prices threatened the plant's viability.
