The freight rate of charter ships to carry bulk commodities out of the Black Sea region has surged by over 20% since the beginning of 2023, reflecting the increase in war insurance premium rates.

The Black Sea region is a shipping hub for grain, oil, and refined products.

Some insurers have added Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine to ship and aircraft war risk exclusions since policy renewals on January 1, 2023.
