India proposes retaliatory duties on UK imports

3 Oct 2022 15:26 reported by Joy Liu

India has proposed to impose a 15% tariff on 22 products imported from the UK, including whiskey, cheese, and diesel engine parts, in retaliation for the UK's decision to restrict imports of steel products from India.

Due to the UK’s safeguard measures, India’s steel exports declined by 219,000 tons, and the duty collected by the UK would be US$247.7 million, India said in a communication to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The measures imposed by the UK government are tariff quotas on 15 steel product categories, with an out-of-quota import duty of 25%.
