US-EU trade deal maintains 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum, sparking industry reactions

The new US-EU trade agreement, effective June 4 for steel and aluminum and August 1 for copper, upholds the 50% tariffs on these metals. The American Iron and Steel Institute praised the decision, citing it as crucial in addressing global overcapacity and unfair imports. The tariffs are viewed as a tool to encourage fair trade and protect domestic production.

However, the Aluminum Association expressed concern, urging targeted trade policies that exclude unfairly subsidized aluminum from US markets.

While details of the agreement remain unclear, the announcement revealed ongoing transatlantic tensions, as EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hinted at implementing a quota system for metal exports.
