US declines early USMCA renewal, raising uncertainty for North American trade

The US government has decided not to renew the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) before the scheduled deadline, triggering an annual review process that could continue for the next 10 years. While the agreement will remain in force until 2036 unless a member withdraws, the move introduces greater uncertainty for businesses planning long-term investments and supply chains across North America.

The US Trade Representative said negotiations with Canada and Mexico will continue to address trade imbalances and improve the agreement. Key issues are expected to include rules of origin, economic security, labor standards, environmental regulations, and intellectual property.

Industries such as steel, automotive, and manufacturing are expected to closely monitor whether products will continue to qualify for USMCA preferential treatment. The decision also reflects the US administration's continued focus on trade protectionism.

Steel, aluminum, and copper imports from Canada and Mexico remain subject to Section 232 tariffs, and any future tariff adjustments will be tied to the administration's goals of reducing the trade deficit, strengthening domestic manufacturing, and reinforcing US supply chains.
