The UK government announced a £200 million investment in the Acorn carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in St Fergus, Scotland. This funding is part of the broader £9.4 billion commitment made during the spending review to support CCS technologies, aiming to help the country meet its net zero emissions target by 2050.

Acorn is being developed by Storegga, Shell UK, Harbour Energy, and North Sea Midstream Partners. The project will capture carbon dioxide from industrial processes and store it under the North Sea.

The government also pledged support for the Viking CCS project in the Humber region, though it did not disclose the funding amount. Combined, both projects could capture up to 18 million tons of CO₂ annually, supporting industrial renewal and creating thousands of skilled jobs.
