US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday (July 8) that the US will implement a 50% tariff on copper imports. The new duty is expected to take effect by the end of July or on August 1.

Speaking during a cabinet meeting, Trump confirmed the measure. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick later affirmed that the Section 232 investigation into copper imports, initiated in late February, has concluded.

The US imported 1.7 million tons of copper and its derivatives in 2024. The country imports nearly half of its consumed copper, mainly from Chile.
