TISCO’s cryogenic membrane stainless steel used in over 30 LNG vessels

China’s TISCO successfully developed a specialized cryogenic membrane stainless steel for liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels, ending international technological monopolies.

The material achieved certification from GTT and multiple classification societies, allowing deliveries to five major Chinese shipyards for use in over 30 LNG carriers.

This 18% chromium and 10% nickel austenitic stainless steel maintains toughness, corrosion resistance, and structural stability at -163°C. Its 1.2-millimeter corrugated design absorbs thermal expansion and contraction stress, accelerating shipbuilding timelines.

The product fits the MARK III LNG cargo containment system and entered active commercial supply. This development illustrates advanced marine-grade specialty steel advancing into the energy and shipbuilding sectors. Future market impacts depend on export expansion and global LNG vessel demands.
