Taiwan’s stainless steel prices supported by high production costs despite cautious buying

Taiwan’s stainless steel mills implemented consecutive price increases for September following August hikes, driven by escalating production expenses and high raw material costs. Market participants indicated that prices will likely resist downward pressure in the short term.

Upstream costs rose due to Indonesian nickel ore production limits and impending export policy revisions, keeping nickel pig iron and stainless steel scrap prices high. A weakening US dollar further increased financial pressure on domestic manufacturers.

Market demand remains cautious as sharp raw material surges approach buyer acceptance limits, leading purchasers to adopt conservative procurement strategies out of concern over potential price corrections. Nevertheless, upcoming fourth-quarter seasonal demand provides fundamental support, preventing prices from experiencing significant near-term declines.
