Strait of Hormuz crisis paralyzes Bandar Abbas, disrupting global supply chains

Following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and escalating geopolitical tensions, steel shipments from Bandar Abbas have come to a complete standstill. As of March 14, 2026, more than 1.3 million tons of raw materials and finished steel products remain stranded at the port, with large vessels unable to complete customs clearance or depart.

The severe congestion at Bandar Abbas has created a major logistical bottleneck. The shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz shipping corridor, combined with heightened security risks, is preventing vessels carrying essential raw materials from continuing their voyages, directly impacting global heavy industries.

In particular, the steel sector is facing mounting pressure. Key inputs such as iron ore remain stuck at port, disrupting upstream supply and tightening raw material availability. The impact is also extending beyond steel, affecting energy flows and other industrial sectors reliant on stable maritime logistics.

Market participants are increasingly concerned that prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz will trigger heightened volatility in global steel prices.

Under the current circumstances, supply chain uncertainty is rising rapidly, and securing stable cargo flows at an early stage will be critical to managing cost risks and ensuring continuity of supply.
