Southern Taiwan’s steel mills face record low rebar orders due to market stagnation

3 Jul 2026 14:31 reported by Joy Liu

Taiwanese rebar market activity remained stagnant for eight weeks past its last main transaction period. Facing surging inventories, southern steel mills organized special meetings with major distributors. The manufacturers offered open negotiations, welcoming any pricing proposals or delivery incentives from buyers to stimulate business.

Distributors rejected the proposals, reporting slow downstream sales and sufficient steel supplies. Even small and medium-sized dealers halted inquiries, resulting in individual weekly transactions falling below 1,000 tons.

Buyers are avoiding new purchases because they have ample stock and anticipate future market decreases. This persistent purchasing freeze left southern manufacturers with minimal order volumes despite their flexible bargaining approach.
