South Korea approves enforcement decree for US investments

South Korea's Cabinet greenlit an enforcement decree to activate a special act governing its US$350 billion investment commitment to the United States. This regulatory framework outlines how the government evaluates the commercial viability of potential projects within the multi-billion-dollar package.

Under the new rules, a project qualifies if the projected income returned to South Korea covers both the investment principal and interest, which are based on 20-year US Treasury yields.

A newly established special committee, chaired by the trade minister, will review all proposals for legality and profitability. Besides, the government will fund a dedicated strategic investment corporation with a 20-year operational lifespan to oversee these ventures.

The overall funding package includes a US$150 billion capital allocation for shipbuilding cooperation and US$200 billion for various strategic sectors.
