South Africa leads Africa’s shift to greener steel

10 Apr 2025 15:59 reported by Evelyn Wu

A A A

South Africa is increasingly relying on green steel production, with mini-mills playing a key role in boosting the economy and cutting carbon emissions.

In 2024, mini-mills in South Africa produced 2.11 million tons of steel, nearly matching traditional coal-fired blast furnaces, which produced 2.59 million tons. Mini-mills have a much lower environmental impact, emitting four to five times less carbon.

South Africa’s vast mineral resources, especially iron ore, offer significant potential for expanding the local steel industry. Policies encouraging local processing and the use of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) can support this growth, reducing reliance on scrap metal. DRI-based production aligns with the country’s sustainability goals. With advanced technologies like induction furnaces, green steel production is becoming more efficient and environmentally friendly.

South Africa is well-positioned to lead Africa in green steel production, combining natural resources, innovative technologies, and sustainable practices to drive economic and environmental progress.
