Nippon Steel pledges up to $2.5 billion for U.S. Steel’s Pennsylvania plants

United States Steel Corp. (U.S. Steel) announced a three-year capital plan funded by its parent company, Nippon Steel Corp. The Japanese manufacturer, which finalized its acquisition of the American steelmaker last year, is allocating US$2 billion to US$2.5 billion to upgrade the Mon Valley Works near Pittsburgh. This total more than doubles the initial funding commitment.

The main project involves building a new hot strip mill at the Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock, replacing an 87-year-old facility at the nearby Irvin Plant. This upgrade aims to improve the production of high-value products, including automotive steel.

An economic analysis estimates that the modernization will inject US$1.7 billion into the local economy and support up to 6,381 jobs across Pennsylvania.
