Mexico to boost domestic steel production, tighten import controls

9 May 2025 16:15 reported by Margaret Yeh

A A A
Due to US tariffs, Mexico will take measures to increase domestic steel production. Moreover, Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard mentioned that the steel suppliers have been asked to provide information about where the plants are before they import steel products. Because they found 1,062 “inconsistencies or violations" in more than 2,000 registrations. Ebrard said that they will start the process of canceling and deleting such registrations.

The Mexican government intends to prevent importers from using false registrations to import steel products and prevent tariff evasion. This is to make sure that steel importing will be legal and promote fair trade.
