Mexico's Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, announced that his country will propose to the United States reducing the tariff applied to Mexican steel from 50% to 10%. The intention is to achieve a tariff treatment similar to that of the United Kingdom during the fourth round of negotiations for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) in September.

Mexico's argument is based on increased local production and key investments in the country's steel industry, such as Ternium's new US$4 billion plant, which is aiming to ensure that steel processing is carried out entirely within Mexico.

Additionally, Ebrard highlighted Mexico's strong trade position as the leading buyer of steel from the United States. The Mexican government is also waiting for the investigation results of the US proceedings regarding Section 301 to determine the impact on global overproduction of steel.
