Jindal Stainless: India needs to develop independent stainless steel policy

According to Jindal Stainless Managing Director Abhyuday Jindal, the Indian stainless steel industry needs a separate policy, not just a chapter in the National Steel Policy. Adding only a chapter will diminish the industry's value and importance.

As India’s largest steel and stainless steel producer, Jindal Stainless accounts for nearly 50% of the country’s total production and sold 2.37 million metric tons in the 2024-25 fiscal year.

Abhyuday Jindal said that the main reason why this industry needs independent policies is that it differs from carbon steel in many ways; the raw materials used, the applications, and the manufacturing processes are all different.

Especially on raw materials, nickel and chrome are crucial to them. India has no nickel resources domestically, only chrome. The government should encourage safeguards for nickel resources similar to those for rare earth materials, and promote larger-scale mining and exploration of chrome to reduce royalties and incentivize investment.

He also said that they need to establish a robust stainless steel ecosystem, including developing educational programs at the policy level, raising awareness at the grassroots level, and cultivating skilled personnel, because stainless steel manufacturing is very different from general steel manufacturing.
