Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a subsidiary of India's state-owned steel producer Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), announced that it has successfully developed electrical-grade steel and manganese-boron steel.

Non-grain-oriented electrical steel is specifically designed for use in electric motors, generators, small power transformers, and rotors for hybrid and electric vehicles. BSL produced about 1,100 tons of 0.5 mm-thick IS 18316 LS grade electrical steel. This steel exhibits stable magnetic properties, effectively improving energy conversion efficiency and reducing power loss.

BSL also simultaneously developed 28MnB5 grade manganese-boron steel, marking the first time this type of steel has been produced in India. Primarily used in agricultural machinery and wear-resistant components, it possesses high strength, high hardness, and excellent wear resistance.

This first domestic development and production of these two types of steel in India not only contributes to the development of India's domestic machinery manufacturing industry but also represents a significant step forward for India in import substitution and the independent production of specialty steels.
