India proposes retaliatory tariffs against US steel and aluminum duties

14 May 2025 14:03 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
India has notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) of its intent to impose retaliatory tariffs on US goods, equivalent to the US$1.91 billion in duties the US collects on Indian steel and aluminum. The move responds to the US extending its safeguard measures, imposing tariffs of 25% and 10% on these imports, which India argues are not consistent with the WTO rules.

India had previously sought consultations with the US on this issue. The proposed tariff increases on selected US products come as both nations are engaged in bilateral trade agreement (BTA) negotiations. India reserves the right to modify the list of products and tariff rates.
