India expands steel import restrictions, industry concerns intensify

23 Jun 2025 15:22 reported by Cris Chen

A A A
India's Ministry of Steel expanded import restrictions on steel and related products, sparking concerns about supply chain disruptions, financial losses, and even factory shutdowns.

The new rule, effective from June 16, requires all imported steel and related raw materials to meet Bureau of Indian Standards' (BIS) Quality Control Orders (QCOs). It may take 6 to 9 months for BIS to issue certificates. This new regulation is causing panic among micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
