Bokaro Steel Plant cooperates with Forbes Marshall to pilot hydrogen injection technology

The Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a steelmaker under the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has partnered with Forbes Marshall Private Limited to implement hydrogen gas injection in its Blast Furnace No.1.

This initiative, part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, enables Bokaro to test hydrogen as a cleaner fuel alternative. The system aims to partially replace coal and carbon-intensive fuels such as coke and coal with hydrogen, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions and improving environmental results.

This project is in line with India’s 2070 net-zero emissions target and serves to lower the steel sector's carbon footprint. By adopting hydrogen-based technology, the plant intends to strengthen the industry's global competitiveness, transitioning toward a sustainable industrial system. Success in this pilot establishes a pathway for cleaner steel production across the country.
