Australia’s green iron export ambitions face massive investment challenge

7 Aug 2026 16:51 reported by Cris Chen

A A A
Australia is accelerating plans to develop a green iron export industry to reduce reliance on coal exports and support global decarbonization.

According to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), the sector will require substantial investment in renewable energy, hydrogen production, power grids, transport infrastructure, and processing facilities.

Achieving the country's 2040 export target would require annual investments of around A$170 billion over the next 14 years. Funding gaps, renewable energy expansion, and supply chain coordination remain significant challenges.

The report concludes that long-term policy support and a green premium will be essential for large-scale industry growth.
