ArcelorMittal Brasil expands renewable capacity with new solar plant in Bahia

A A A
ArcelorMittal Brasil completed a US$1.1 billion investment program in renewable energy with the commissioning of a 200-MW solar plant at the Babilônia Centro complex in Varzea Nova, Bahia. The facility, which began operations in March, is equipped with 365,000 solar panels and required an investment of approximately US$140 million.

With the new plant, the company expects to increase the share of self-generated renewable electricity from 61% to 85% by 2030. The Babilônia Centro complex, a joint venture with Casa dos Ventos, has received around US$950 million in total investment and now has an installed capacity of 753.5 MW. Its wind power plant began operations in September 2025, making the site a hybrid facility combining wind and solar energy.

About 90% of the electricity generated will supply ArcelorMittal’s industrial operations, with the remainder sold on the national market. The project is part of the company’s energy transition strategy.
