Allium Engineering triples bridge lifespan with new stainless steel-clad rebar technology

Allium Engineering, founded by two MIT PhDs, is revolutionizing infrastructure durability with a new stainless steel-clad rebar technology, which promises to triple the lifespan of bridges, extending them from an average of 30 years to 100 years.

A key challenge for aging infrastructure is rusting rebar, which causes concrete to crack. Allium's process adds a thin, protective stainless steel layer to traditional rebar to make it more resistant to corrosion. This way not only extends structural life but also reduces repair frequency and carbon emissions.

Around 100,000 pounds of Allium's stainless steel-clad rebar have already been used in US construction projects. The company's technology seamlessly integrates into existing steelmaking processes, offering a scalable, cost-effective, and sustainable solution for global infrastructure.
