Canada to invest up to $400 million in Teck's critical minerals expansion

10 Jul 2026 15:46 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Teck Resources (Teck) signed a Strategic Investment Agreement on July 7 with Canada Growth Fund Inc. (CGF) and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to boost production at Teck’s Trail Operations smelting and refining complex in British Columbia (Trail).

CGF will provide up to $400 million in equity-like funding, supporting a potential $850 million total investment by Teck to enhance processing capacity for germanium, antimony, and gallium.

This inaugural deal under the Canada Critical Minerals Accelerator introduces a government offtake structure for the metals. These materials are essential for fiber optics, semiconductors, and national security technologies. The project could double Trail's germanium and antimony capacity and introduce gallium production, protecting economic security.

Final realization depends on definitive documentation and approvals.
