Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced plans to expand its use of low-CO2-emission steel in Japan, aiming for a fivefold increase by fiscal year 2025 compared to 2023 levels. This move supports Nissan's broader goals to cut CO2 emissions by 30% across the product life cycle by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Since steel accounts for about 60% of a vehicle's weight, shifting to green steel significantly lowers emissions. The company began using Kobenable® Steel from Kobe Steel in 2023 and will now incorporate Nippon Steel's NSCarbolex® Neutral, JFE Steel's JGreeX®, and POSCO's carbon reduction-allocated steel. These materials reduce CO2 emissions during production by using low-carbon-reduced iron and electric arc furnaces instead of traditional blast furnaces.
