The European Steel Association (EUROFER) hoped the European Commission to limit scrap exports due to the steel industry’s ambition toward decarbonization.

EUROFER said EU scrap consumption is expected to increase significantly in the coming years, so restricting the export of scrap to third countries without comparable environmental and social standards will ensure that the use of ferrous scrap generated in the EU helps realize sustainable development goals consistent with EU goals.

The association reemphasized its view about the European Commission treating scrap as a strategic secondary raw material to ensure the implementation in line with EU environmental standards and avoid circumvention, ensuring a sustainable and diverse supply of raw materials.
