Near the end of 2023, China's Baowu announced another breakthrough on its journey of decarbonization, a million-ton hydrogen-based shaft furnace was ignited and put into operation at Zhanjiang, Guangdong province.

This project adopts the world-first technology “Hydrogen Reduction Electric Furnace (HyRESP)” which was originally innovated by Baowu, paving a new way for green steel production. This pilot project is anticipated to cut carbon dioxide emissions by more than 500,000 tons per year compared with using a traditional blast furnace iron-making process, which is equivalent to recreating a 500-square-kilometer forest.

As the largest steel production country, China also plays a very important role in the field of developing eco-friendly technology. The successful operation of HyRESP not only solidifies China's commitment to green transformation but also sets an inspiring precedent for the steel industry worldwide.
