Mexico raises tariffs on steel imports from countries without FTA

In order to protect domestic industry, Mexico will raise tariffs to up to 25% on imports of 483 products, including steel products, from countries without free trade agreements, such as China and other Asian countries. The tariffs will be effective from August 16, 2023 to July 31, 2025.

Steel products like carbon steel and stainless steel pipes, cold-rolled stainless steel, and color-coated steel products will be subject to a 25% tariff from the effective date. Painted, varnished, or plastic-coated steel under HS codes 7210.70.02 and 7212.40.04 will be subject to a 10% duty until December 31, 2023 and a 25% duty during the period from January 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025.

Other products that will be subject to higher import tariffs include screws, nuts, metal furniture, bamboo, musical instruments, and so forth.
